How St Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world

From Ireland to the Caribbean, everyone loves a St Patrick's Day party!

Originally the celebration of Saint Patrick (who lived 385-461) and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, these days you’ll find St Patrick’s Day celebrations everywhere across the world. Here are a few of our favourites.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin, Ireland

Of course, the number one spot to celebrate St Patrick’s Day is in good ol’ Ireland itself. Head straight to the streets of Dublin and you’ll be greeted with parades, marching bands, funfairs, live music and no end of fun.

Here, everyone gets into the spirit and you’re guaranteed to have a proper Irish good time!

New York City, USA

New York City, USA

Boasting not just the oldest, but also the largest celebration in the world, New York City knows just how to ring in St Patrick’s Day. Every year since 1762, revellers have lined the streets of Fifth Avenue to watch the momentous parade taking place, often lasting over 5 hours of fun.

There’s no denying that NYC is proud of its Irish heritage!

Montserrat, Caribbean

Montserrat, Caribbean

The only place outside of Ireland where St Patrick’s is a national holiday, the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat goes all out with its celebrations. With Irish roots dating back to the 17th century, Montserrat is known as the Emerald Island, has green and gold national colours and an Irish harp on its flag.

With only 4000 residents, Montserrat is the place to head for a tropical St Patrick’s Day.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Believe it or not, Buenos Aires is home to the 5th largest Irish population in the word – and in a city that loves to party, St Patrick’s Day is always a winner. Known here as La Fiesta de San Patricio, the streets around the Retiro district fill with music, dancing and merriment in a 10 block radius.

Watch the parade at Plaza San Martin or party the night away on Reconquista Street.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo, Japan

With the city’s first parade taking place back in 1992, the spirit of Saint Patrick’s Day has certainly hit Tokyo. Growing in popularity ever since, the events now brings in over 300,000 spectators, all day parades and Guinness that’s imported specially.

Across the city, Tokyoites and tourists alike come together to join in the fun.
