The official currency in Colombia is the peso - abbreviated to COP. Like many of the other South American pesos, 1 Colombian peso is divided into 100 centavos.



Pesos have been used in Colombia since 1810 when they replaced the use of the real. The central bank in Colombia is the Banco de la República, which issues the peso.



Since 2001 the Colombian Senate has been discussing the possibility of introducing a new peso worth 1000 old pesos, in a bid to streamline the amount of zeros currently recited on coins and banknotes.

    The Colombian peso is considered to be a restricted currency, meaning there are limitations to the tradability of this currency. Fund transfers in Colombian pesos are not allowed outside of Colombia.

  • Are US dollars accepted in Colombia?

    While there may be a handful of places that accept USD as a form of payment, unlike many other South American nations, the majority of Colombia does not accept US dollars; therefore it’s recommend to change AUD into pesos before heading off to Columbia.

  • What credit cards are accepted in Colombia?

    The most widely-accepted credit cards in Colombia are Visa, MasterCard and American Express. You should be able to use these credit cards at most shops, hotels and restaurants.
