The official currency in Taiwan is the dollar - abbreviated to the currency code TWD. 1 Dollar is divided into 10 jiao which are then divided into a further 10 fen or cents.



The dollar, also referred to as the ‘New Taiwan dollar’, was introduced in 1949, when Taiwan replaced its Old Taiwan dollar. The new dollar’s initial role was to reduce the hyperinflation caused by the Chinese Civil War.



The dollar has been issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) since 2000; while the Bank of Taiwan issued banknotes prior to this time.



The most commonly-used bills for New Taiwan dollars are the 100, 500 and 1000 notes.

  • Is the Taiwanese dollar a restricted currency?

    Yes, the Taiwanese dollar is a restricted currency in that it can only be traded in a limited capacity. Fund transfers in this currency are not allowed outside of Taiwan.

  • How much money can you take to Taiwan?

    You cannot take over 100,000 Taiwanese dollars or 10,000 US dollars in cash when entering or exiting Taiwan.

  • What credit cards are widely-accepted in Taiwan?

    You can typically use Visa, MasterCard, JCB and ChinaPay cards throughout Taiwan, but American Express cards are not often accepted.
