Best Destinations for Solo Travel

Solo travel has become increasingly accepted over the years, and is now more popular than ever before.

A recent study found that 71% of Aussies surveyed were happy to travel on their own, with reasons for embarking on solo trips ranging from wanting to explore new destinations alone, to not having anyone to travel with. For the more spiritually inclined, the third most popular reason for embarking on a solo trip was cited as wanting to go on a journey of personal “self discovery”.

Whatever your reason for booking a solo holiday, there’s no denying that there are a multitude of destinations that are perfectly suited for the lone traveller. We’ve rounded up what we think are the best solo travel destinations for 2020.

Singapore

Travelling solo can sometimes be easier in a big city. Choosing a city-break destination means you’ll never get bored, and you’ll never stand out from the crowd, making it easier to blend in and be anonymous on your own.

For a city-break that won’t break the bank, Singapore makes for a perfect short solo holiday destination. A cultural melting pot that’s easily accessed by most of Australia’s International Airports, Singapore offers culinary delights, endless shopping experiences, markets, galleries, museums, and events. Eat your way through the country’s famous Hawker Centres, or spend an afternoon wandering the famous shopping street of Orchard Avenue. What’s more, English is the main language spoken on the island, meaning you won’t experience any language barriers!

Costa Rica

Costa Rica

With pristine beaches, solo traveller-friendly towns, and plenty of easy transport options, Costa Rica is another of our favourite solo travel destinations. A mecca for yogis, surfers, and animal-lovers alike, there’s plenty of ways to find your tribe when travelling on your own.

Spend some time in backpacker-friendly towns such as Tamarindo, Santa Teresa, Puerto Viejo and Nosara before heading out to one of the many nature reserves. Here you’ll be able to get up close and personal with animals like the three-toed sloth, and explore lush tropical rainforests.

Meet other solo travellers by signing up for a retreat, partaking in Spanish classes. For some solid alone time, the beach is the perfect place to chill out solo.
