The official currency of Ecuador is the US dollar. While US dollar bills are used in Ecuador, the country issues its own centavo coins.

US dollars have been used in Ecuador since 2000 and replaced the former currency, the Ecuadorian sucre. When introduced the dollar was equal to around 25,000 sucres.

The move from sucres to dollars was spurred on by the economic crisis in Ecuador in 1999 which caused the sucre to collapse so badly that citizens began changing their holdings over to US dollars, unofficially dollarising the country’s economy.

The most commonly used bills for US dollars in Ecuador are the 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 notes.
