The lowdown on the Danish Krone

The Danish Krone is accepted in the following countries:

  • Denmark
  • Faroe Islands
  • Greenland

Some merchants in larger cities of Denmark such as Copenhagen may accept payments in euros but are not legally obligated to do so.

Economical Influences and the Danish Krone

If you are considering converting AUD to DKK, it’s good to get a snapshot on how the economy influences the Danish exchange rate.

The Danish krone uses the European Exchange Rate Mechanism System (ERM 2) framework for its currency, and has had a fixed-exchange-rate policy since the early 80’s. This means that the Danish krone is fixed to the euro exchange rate with only minor fluctuations. As a result, the Danish krone is not just influenced by the Danish economy directly but also by the wider European market. Each 100 euro is pegged at between 746.068 and 729.252 kroner with a fluctuation band of around 2.25 percent each way. The krone managed to successfully navigate through the exchange rate crises in the 1990’s partly due to the fixed exchange rate policy it had put in place.1
