The lowdown on the Thai baht

Thai baht is the official currency in Thailand, but you can use it unofficially in Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos. It’s one of the strongest currencies in Southeast Asia, but still fairly weak against more well-off countries – that’s why Thailand’s one of the best value destinations you can choose for your holiday.

Thai currency has been called the baht since 1897 – before that it was known as the tical, which is what was printed on Thai banknotes until 1925. The baht is made up of 100 satang, but you won’t get much for the smaller coins – they’re so low in value you might just want to keep them for your coin collection.
